Spotlight on Smarties by NCA

What a treat to see the recent post by President and CEO of the National Confectioners Association (NCA), John Downs, about Smarties Candy Company! This article in the NCA’s “CEO Corner,” highlights our recent CNN Money coverage and includes Downs’ unique perspective.

He writes, “Three young women with executive positions in the family-run Smarties Candy Company are poised to take over the company as it enters its strongest period in history thanks, in part, to some of the changes they have implemented since coming on board.” Visit his piece to read more!

Smarties featured on CNNMoney!

The Smarties candy story was recently featured on CNN Money! We highly suggest that you stop whatever you’re doing and go read it right away. Here’s a highlight from the piece:

“Any kid — or kid at heart — who has done the Halloween trick-or-treat ritual knows Smarties. The multi-colored tablets have been around since 1949.
What you might not know is that Smarties are still made in a Union, New Jersey plant that employs over 100 workers.” Check out the full article to learn more.

Thanks so much to Heather Long and the folks at CNN Money for featuring Smarties, and thanks to all of you for supporting Smarties!

Sweet Wishes,

The Smarties Family

New Jersey Rocks!

Here at Smarties headquarters, we’re proud to claim New Jersey as our home. Turns out, we’re in excellent company; Bon Jovi is a NJ rock -n- roll staple, and we just so happen to have his album named after our beloved state!

Easy Valentine Craft Idea

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Is there anything sweeter than a homemade valentine? We don’t think so. That’s why we came up with this easy and elegant craft for those of you who care to make cards with a personal touch.

The final product? A heart shaped valentine with a witty message & a roll of Smarties attached.

IMG_5968What you will need:

  • Cardstock – Choose a color for your Valentine.
  • Scissors
  • Box cutter or X-Acto Knife
  • Valentine Smarties or Original Smarties rolls
  • 1 Sharpie, permanent marker or glitter pen!

Step 1:  Make a heart.

Fold cardstock in half and cut half of heart shape like this:

Step 2: Hold Smarties roll in front of the heart.  Use your box cutter to make to vertical slits in the heart where the twists are located.

Step 3:  Press the twist ends through the slices you made in the heart. Turn over to really make sure the ends are pulled through to secure the candy to the Valentine.

Step 4:  Grab your pen & decorate to your heart’s content!  Some cute messages you might use include… “Don’t go breakin’ my heart!” “Giving you my heart is smart, Valentine!” “You’re a sweetheart!”

We hope you enjoy the craft, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sweet wishes,

Smarties Adorned Gingerbread Fallingwater House

Who knew Smarties could double as “dry stack stone” for this remarkably detailed Fallingwater Gingerbread House?  The original home, designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was built between 1936 and 1939.  The name Fallingwater is fitting as the home sits atop a waterfall and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark in Pennsylvania.

Special thanks & photo credit to: Garden Melodies for the gingerbread house.

Smitten with Smarties sugar cookies!

IMG_4601Who doesn’t love a good sugar cookie?

This recipe yields truly delicious cookies, so what are you waiting for? Make the dough, cut out shapes, bake, frost and decorate!

Smarties Sugar Cookies
adapted from She Knows via

1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup vegan butter
1-2 tablespoon water
1 t. vanilla
Icing (recipe below)
1 bag of Smarties Original Rolls

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.

In a mixer bowl combine flour, sugar and baking soda – blend on low just to combine. Add butter, vanilla and 1 tablespoon of water to the mixture – blend on low until just combined (add an additional 1 tablespoon of water if dough seems dry).

Divide the dough into two even pieces; roll each half between two pieces of parchment paper to 1/4 inch thick. Cut dough into desired shapes (dipping your cutter in flour between cuts), and freeze for at least 30 minutes.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place one sheet of dough onto a cutting board remove both pieces of parchment paper. Using a thin spatula, carefully transfer cookies to your prepared baking sheets. Bake for 7-10 minutes, till lightly browned around the edges. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Re-roll scraps until you have used up all of the dough.

When cookies are completely cooled, ice and decorate with Smarties.

Icing Recipe
From Adela Jung via Chow

3 sticks unsalted vegan butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
4 teaspoons vanilla extract

1. Place the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and mix on medium-high speed until fluffy and light in color, about 4 minutes. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl and the paddle with a rubber spatula.
